3 - 24 hours after

The artist may provide you with a second bandage to change into at home. If that’s the case, remove your bandage following the instructions listed below and apply your second bandage to the area.

3 - 6 days after

Remove your adhesive bandage with the following steps:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds
  2. Find an edge of the bandage and gently pull it back over itself in the direction of your natural hair growth. Ideally do this in the shower, running water will help loosen the adhesive and relax the skin.
  3. Gently cleanse the tattoo with a mild fragrance-free soap and warm water. Do not use a shower loofah/used washcloth which may harbour bacteria. Instead, use a fresh washcloth or your clean hands.
  4. Gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel or a fresh soft towel. Avoid drying with a used hand/body towel.

If the skin appears irritated or the bandage is coming off, it’s okay to remove the bandage sooner rather than later.

The following 2 weeks

Clean your tattoo once a day with mild soap and warm water.

Apply a thin layer of aftercare lotion or fragrance free moisturiser to your tattoo 1-2 times a day until the tattoo is no longer peeling, dry, or cracked.

Avoid exposing your healing tattoo to direct sunlight and do not submerge your tattoo in water, showers are fine.

Forever

For best results keep up a good moisturising regimen and apply SPF 50+ sunscreen to protect your tattoos from sun exposure.

Notes on Saniderm Adhesive Bandages

If you experience any irritation / itchiness / burning or redness around the bandage, this could be an allergic reaction to the adhesive. Remove the bandage carefully by following the directions outlined above.

Please advise the artist if you are allergic to latex, adhesive band-aid or medical tape before your appointment so they can prepare a suitable bandage for you.

Showering

Showering while wearing Saniderm is fine, but it’s best to keep the time spent in the shower to a minimum. It’s also important to keep an eye on the temperature of the water. Too much heat can separate the bandage from the skin, inflame the skin, and irritate the tattoo.

Swimming

Water may weaken the adhesive of the bandage, which allows for unwanted contaminants to enter the bandage, putting you at higher risk for infection. For these reasons, bathing, swimming, or fully submerging a tattoo dressed in Saniderm is strongly discouraged.

Exercising

Light exercise while wearing Saniderm is fine, but avoid activity that causes excessive sweating. Just as water will weaken the adhesion of the bandage, so will sweat and any other significant amount of fluid. Try to keep the bandage as clean and dry as possible until it’s time to remove it.
